Cosmetic surgery booming despite economy

LONDON (Reuters) - Britons might be feeling the pinch of the global credit crunch, but they're still ready to pay thousands of pounds for cosmetic surgery, a report suggested on Monday.

Britain's largest cosmetic surgery provider the Harley Medical Group said demand for procedures had grown by 35 percent over the past 10 months.

NOTE: HARLEY MEDICAL GROUP IS WELL KNOWN IN TERMS OF COSMETIC SURGERY.

Abdomnoplasty or "tummy tuck" operations, a procedure costing nearly 5,000 pounds, were up 59 percent, while breast augmentation surgery swelled 40 percent, it said.

Demand was high from the city of London to Leeds and Cheshire, a region popular with footballers and their wives.

The group said it carried out more than 300 tummy tuck operations in the last 10 months, compared with 160 operations in the previous 10-month period.

"It's interesting to see what people cut back on during a credit crunch," said Harley Medical Group's Liz Dale.

"Research among our patients has shown that despite cutting back across all other areas ... people aren't cutting back on money they spend on themselves.

"For many who are undertaking an abdomnoplasty this is something they've planned for years. For this reason, they're unlikely to want to now put this off and instead they consider their procedure to be an investment."

NOTE: IN BRITAIN, PEOPLE LOOK AT COSMETIC SURGERY AS AN INVESTMENT RATHER THAN EXPENSE.

Miley Cyrus Dates Older Man, Needs a Nose Job

Miley Cyrus & Marshall
Everyone's talking about Disney star Miley Cyrus dating an "older man". The 15 year old has been seen getting smoochy with a 22 year old backup dancer by the name of Marshall.

What's the big deal? Everyone knows 22 year old boys have the emotional age of a 13 year old…

Note: Miley Cyrus is Hannah Montanna

Meanwhile, a celebrity plastic surgery website says that Hannah Montana star Miley Cyrus "seriously" needs a nose job. Are they nuts?

This is what they say

I never really like Miley Cyrus' nose. Do we want our kids to epitomize her and how she looks? Is that how "cute" should like?

Miley Cyrus needs (and I mean REALLY) a nose job. Soon! Before little girls start to believe that they should look like her. Please have mercy on the next generation!

Note: Cyrus is the young star famous to young children.

Please have mercy on us that anyone thinks Miley Cyrus 'needs' rhinoplasty surgery. Would it improve her appearance? Yes. Does she need it? Heck no.

In New Zealand, both Aja Rock and Nicky Watson are reported to have had at least two nose jobs, although the prize has to go to reality television regular Brigitte Nielsen of The Surreal Life and Celebrity Rehab (reunion episode screening this Tuesday on Sky TV) who plans to be filmed having cosmetic surgery

The 44-year old model and actress is planning on undergoing numerous plastic surgeries while a TV crew films the operations for a three-part program to be broadcast on German TV channel RTL.

According to Brigitte, she will receive, "a complete renewal: facelift, eyelift, fat injections in my face, liposuction, a breast lift and I need new teeth."

Ugh. That's one TV show Miss Prozac won't be watching.

Iraqi girl's eye surgery at University of Rochester Medical Center lets her see light

For the first time in her life, 5-year-old Noor Al-Ithawi saw the light of day Monday.

The Iraqi girl underwent artificial corneal transplant surgery on her left eye Monday morning at the University of Rochester Medical Center. The surgery repaired some damage to her eyes caused by a birth defect called Peters anomaly. Another surgery will take place today.

NOTE: SUCCESSFUL PROCEDURE ALSO CREATES HOPE.

Noor, who lives in Baghdad, was selected for the surgery after lobbying by U.S. military officials who said her father was very helpful to their efforts in Iraq. The surgery was arranged and funded by the Los Angeles-based Eye Defects Research Foundation and Bausch and Lomb.

Dr. James Aquavella, a corneal surgeon with the UR Eye Institute who performed the surgery, said Noor's eye is covered with a bandage, but for a brief time Monday afternoon it was off and she could sense light and hand movements.

She was completely blind in both eyes before the surgery.

"Her cornea was totally opaque. It was like a white chalkboard. You couldn't see anything in, and she couldn't see anything out," he said.

Aquavella said Noor was groggy after surgery and it's uncertain if she understands what happened. Noor's mother, Shaymaa Al-Ithawi, never told the girl she was having surgery, so she wouldn't be scared. She has also wrestled with the right way to explain blindness to a young child who has never known sight.

Noor simply knows she is different, and Al-Ithawi, who spoke through an interpreter, said she's eager to see her daughter's response to her new sense.

"She's just praying for the day that Noor opens her eyes and sees her mother's face," said interpreter Aly Nahas, on behalf of Al-Ithawi.

This morning, Noor will have a second surgery to remove fibrous bands on her retina that threaten to contract and detach the vital tissue, permanently damaging her chances for sight. Retinal surgeons will also remove jelly-like fluid from the eye and replace it with clear liquid.

Aquavella said the second surgery will improve her vision even more, but it could be several weeks before the extent of Noor's vision is known. Al-Ithawi hopes her daughter will eventually be able to read with glasses so she can attend school. She and Noor leave for Iraq on Saturday.

NOTE: CRUCIAL AS IT MAY SEEM, BUT CHILDREN FINDS HOPE IN PROPER SURGERY.
