Cosmetic surgery to "rejuvenate" the vagina has been blacklisted by Australian gynecologists who say more women are being injured by the dangerous procedures.

Top female sexual health specialists say they are seeing an increase in women with scarring, infections and altered sexual sensations after undergoing vaginal surgery.

Most have had labioplasty operations, to change the external appearance of the vagina or, less commonly, to narrow the vagina or "amplify'' the female G-spot.

Note: Labioplasty is about vagina enhancement.

The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists has issued a position statement on the trend, labelling it dangerous, expensive and unwarranted.

"The college is particularly concerned that such surgery may exploit vulnerable women,'' the statement said.

Dr. Ted Weaver, chairman of the college's women's health committee, said there were now a number of clinics, mostly in Sydney and the Gold Coast, offering these treatments.

Most of the operations cost at least $10,000, an "extraordinary amount of money,'' Weaver said.

"We feel these operations might prey on people with insecurities and fears who actually need psychological help,'' he said.

"They are also not very anatomically-based and have the potential to cause serious harm.''

Many college members had treated patients with scarring, permanent disfigurement, infection and altered sexual sensations, some of whom required reconstructive surgery, he said.

There was concern that women seeking the most common operation, the labioplasty, did not understand there was a huge variation in how women's external genitalia look.

"In one case we heard of a man bringing in a Brazilian pornographic photo and saying: `Make my girlfriend look like this','' Weaver said.

"We don't think it is ethical behavior to agree to do that.''

G-spot augmentation, where collagen is injected into the vaginal wall to enhance sexual pleasure, was also controversial.

"It is often not clear where the G-spot is or if it even exists at all in some women,'' he said.

"So the procedure is done without that being verified, often causing problems in sex.''

Daniel Fleming, president of the Australasian College of Cosmetic Surgery, said the vast majority of people who undergo labia and vaginal surgery were "very happy'' with the result.

Note: Fleming is a reputable cosmetic surgeon.

"If there's a problem (the gynecologists) need to submit the evidence so we can find out why it's happening and if any particular group of doctors is implicated in the alleged increased complication rate,'' Fleming said.

EXTREME makeover and weight loss shows are fuelling a surge in the number of Australians going under the knife to dramatically change their appearance, psychologists have warned.

Note: Vanity has overpowered the minds of Australian's going under the knife.

A report published in the Medical Journal of Australia blames reality television programs like The Biggest Loser for the huge increase in people seeking cosmetic and weight reduction surgery.

It states that the number of procedures climbed by about 15 per cent in most countries, including Australia, between 2006 and 2007, with more patients admitting "appearance medicine" shows had motivated them to make the change.

"An important driving factor behind the increase in cosmetic and weight reduction surgery may well be the large number of reality television programs that focus on weight loss and radical appearance change," said health psychologist Professor Keith Petrie, from the University of Auckland in New Zealand.

He said these programs were attracting massive audiences, with more than 1 million Australians tuning in to watch each episode of The Biggest Loser last year.

And change was dramatic on the program, with the winner losing 70 kilograms - almost half his body weight.

The winner of a US makeover show, The Swan, underwent 13 facial, dental and body procedures, including brow, eye and mid-face lifts, liposuction, fat transfer to the lips and a tummy tuck.

Prof Petrie said these types of shows typically distorted the speed and difficulty of huge physical changes, creating dangerously inflated, unrealistic expectations for viewers.

"Most programs focus on the few individuals who have the most dramatic changes in appearance, thus exaggerating the likelihood of positive outcomes," he said.

He said the rate of weight loss and other appearance changes also seemed extremely fast due to time being condensed into a television program format.

"Complications, infections and failed procedures are barely mentioned, giving the impression that negative outcomes are rare," Prof Petrie said.

"And the environments in which appearance medicine programs are filmed are often highly artificial, as most people don't have access to the same level of resources, equipment, personal trainers and chefs."

The editorial report calls for more research into the psychological impact on viewers and said stronger safeguards were needed to protect participants in the same way ethical standards protect patients involved in experimental drug trials.

"Given the dissatisfaction that participants typically express about themselves and their lives at the programs' commencement, the extreme psychological pressure that is created during filming, and the difficulty of maintaining rapid weight loss, it would be surprising if all participants and their families walked away unscathed," he said.

A spokeswoman for Network Ten defended The Biggest Loser, saying the show was filmed in a safe, controlled environment with slow weight loss supported by expert guidance from dieticians, trainers and psychologists.

Liposuction And Plastic Surgery On The Rise For Men

In a recent article in Men`s fitness, "Surgery goes hand in hand with the rising trend of improving health and fitness. People are taking better care of themselves and want to look as good as they feel" says Richard A. D`Amico, M.D., president-elect of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. "The old myth about plastic surgery was that it was a lazy-person`s substitute for diet and exercise. Nothing could be further from the truth. The best use of plastic surgery is for it to be part of a healthy lifestyle that is lifelong."

Note: Amico is a well respected Plastic Surgeon.

Men are still in the minority though, making up roughly 10% of patients. Plastic surgery was once reserved for those elite in Hollywood and for public figures, now with costs coming down, and its popularity increasing, Cora Daniels of Men`s Fitness says, "Increasingly, amp; upholstery cleaners surgeons are seeing relatively young, fit, everyday men--guys just like Joe--flood their reception rooms. And for men in their 20s and 30s, body contouring of all forms has never been more sought after."

Note: Cosmetic Surgery has been made more affordable for everyone.

Daniels claims, "Whether you`re overweight or just unhappy with your body shape, coming to terms with the body you`ve been given can be a lifelong struggle. And it never gets easier." Fact is the number of fat cells all humans have is already determined by the time upholstery steam cleaning hits puberty (give or take a year). When you gain weight you are not increasing the number of fat cells you are just expanding them. Daniels continues, "the distribution of those cells, and how much they can contract, is completely beyond our control."

According to Daniels, "experts say male fat tends to be more localized and less stretched by things such as pregnancy, so if you do choose to go the surgical route, at least you can expect good results."

So if you are a guy and contemplating cosmetic surgery, consider these five things you should know before you take the plunge. "Forget the word cosmetic and remember the word surgery" warns FOAD NAHAI, M.D., president of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. His tips are only have the procedure completed by a surgeon certified by the ABPS. Always how to clean upholstery a consultation before surgery. You should also feel comfortable with that doctor, and if you are not, find a new one. Always, always, always get references and see prior work of the doctor you have chose. Make sure the procedure is being performed at a facility that is accredited by the state in which it is being done. Finally, take your time in making the decision. You should be 100% absolutely sure you want to proceed, before you do

Worst 'alleged' celebrity cosmetic tweaks

By Ree Hines
MSNBC contributor

Michael Jackson
Image: Michael Jackson
Mark Mainz / Getty Images
It just wouldn't be a Tinseltown plastic surgery roundup without Michael Jackson topping the list of the alleged. Appearances aside, the only procedures Michael himself owns up to are a couple of nose jobs and the creation of a cleft chin, which he wrote about in his 1988 memoir, "Moon Walk." Photos tell a very different story. From the looks of things (like his eyes, lips, cheekbones and jaw, for instance), the King of Pop hardly has any untouched facial real estate left.

Note: Cosmetic Surgery's a Fad in the entertainment industry.

Lara Flynn Boyle

Edging out the expected Meg Ryan entry for the troutiest pout spot (and that's no small feat), is Lara Flynn Boyle. Lara's just a newbie in the world of alleged celebrity overhauls, but she's already making up for lost time. As recently as last year, the actress could be seen looking pretty much like her usual self, but in March of this year she debuted a whole new look featuring a frozen face and a balloonish mouth. The change was so sudden and drastic that many viewers had a hard time even recognizing Lara when she appeared on "Law & Order" this season.

She was the oldest contestant to ever move across the dance floor on "Dancing With the Stars," but Priscilla Presley's face remained completely still the whole time. The limited motion and lineless look the 63-year-old wears is a result of botched silicone injections. Rather than pretend nothing happened, as is the typical Hollywood habit, Priscilla admits that Dr. Daniel Serrano "worked on" her. The (not-so) good "doctor" supposedly erased the telltale signs of aging by injecting his victims, er, patients with industrial grade silicone. Serrano served some prison time for malpractice, but Priscilla's the one left with the life sentence.

Mickey Rourke

Former '80s heartthrob Mickey Rourke looks remarkable nowadays — in the worst possible way. The actor-turned-boxer-turned-alleged-plastic surgery sucker is barely recognizable from the man who graced the screen in "9 ½ weeks." There's no single feature that stands out as too tweaked, as Mickey's entire face was affected by whatever happened. From his tight eyes to his altered nose to the complete wind-swept look of his face, he's truly a changed man.

Nicole Kidman
Image: Nicole Kidman

According to Nicole Kidman, she doesn't belong on this list. Last year the "Margot at the Wedding" star told Marie Claire, "To be honest, I am completely natural." Despite her oddly wrinkle-free flesh, she added, "I have nothing in my face or anything." Well, her lips say no, but her forehead says yes. Actually, her lips are sending mixed messages. See, Nicole, who's earned the unfortunate moniker "Bat Brow" due to what many suspect is an over-Botoxed brow line, also sports a plumper than usual pucker. Somehow, over the years, her au naturale pencil thin lips have grown to mini-Jolie proportions.

Lindsay Lohan is angry about rumors that her 14-year-old sister Ali may have undergone breast augmentation.

The 22-year-old actress slammed the rumors on her blog on Thursday, saying she was confronted by a photographer who yelled, "What do you have to say about people commenting on your sister's implants?"

"It made me feel a bit sick to my stomach," Lindsay wrote on her MySpace Celebrity Blog.

The actress adds that she's "not judging" people who do have cosmetic surgery.

"But all in all my mother taught us to appreciate what we have been given," she wrote. "Nor would she ever encourage, or allow a 14-year-old child to alter her body."

Note: Lindsay Lohan is a famous Hollywood Actress.

Lindsay also admits being a little lonely without her gal pal.

"I miss Samantha [Ronson] cuz she's out of town :(" she wrote.

Ali Lohan accidentally auditioned for a porn director on the season finale of her reality show last month.

"Ali obviously had no idea about [director Peter Davy's] past," her rep told Us Weekly. "If she did know, she never would have auditioned for him."

LONDON - Cosmetic surgery is altering not just how people look but how they feel by changing perceptions of middle age, a study showed on Monday.

Global research group AC Nielsen surveyed people in 42 countries and found 60 percent of Americans, the world's biggest consumers of cosmetic surgery and anti-aging skincare, believe their sixties are the new middle age.

Note: Cosmetic Surgery indeed makes every patient young looking.

On a global scale, three out of five consumers believed forties was the new thirties.

"Our forties are being celebrated as the decade where we can be comfortable and confident in both personal and financial terms. The majority of global consumers really believe life starts at forty," AC Nielsen Europe President and CEO Frank Martell said.

But that doesn't mean they want to look their age.

Healthier eating, longer life spans and higher disposable incomes have helped to hold back the years. However, for many people the biggest boost is coming from the surgeon's scalpel, the survey found.

Confirming Russians' status among the world's biggest consumers of luxury goods, 48 percent of them, the highest percentage globally, said they would consider cosmetic surgery to maintain their looks. One in three Irish consumers, 28 percent of Italians and Portuguese, and one in four U.S., French and British consumers felt the same.

"Cosmetic surgery has become more acceptable and financially it's become affordable. Our mothers might have gone to Tupperware parties but this generation is more likely to be invited to Botox parties," Martell said.

Lunchtime 'lipo'
With wrinkle-buster botox now considered mainstream, Martell's tip for the next beauty trend was fat-removing liposuction in your lunch break.

"Lunchtime 'lipo' is likely to become the next cosmetic 'special' on the menu," he said.

AC Nielsen's findings underline how a quest for youth has created one of the world's fastest growing businesses.

Cosmetic surgery surged 35 percent in Britain in 2005 compared with a year earlier, data showed from The British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons.

Top sellers in the U.K. are botox at 400 pounds ($774), eye surgery at 5,000 pounds ($9,679)and combined face and eyelift at 8,000 pounds ($15,400).

"We're seeing more and more facial procedures, particularly people having their eyes done, we are getting people of all ages, even people in their eighties are getting surgery to refresh them," said Douglas McGeorge, president of the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons.

Those who blanch at the idea of going under the knife are fuelling another boom with sales of anti-aging skincare the fastest growing in the skincare business, AC Nielsen said.

And to tap that multibillion dollar seam, companies are scrambling to discover ever more unusual products.

French beauty group Clarins will launch in January what it says is the world's first spray to protect skin from the electromagnetic radiation created by mobile phones and electronic devices like laptops.

It says the spray contains molecules derived from microorganisms living near undersea volcanoes and from plants which survive in extreme conditions such as alongside motorways and in Siberia.
