Eye surgery offered close to home
William Harvey Hospital
Surgery can now be carried out at the William Harvey Hospital
Hundreds of patients who faced travelling to London for complex eye operations can now have the surgery closer to home in Kent.

Back-of-the-eye surgery will be carried out by the new vitreo-retinal service at William Harvey Hospital in Ashford.

It will treat patients with eye problems such as detached retina, penetrating eye injury, haemorrhage and diabetic damage to the retina.

Consultant Wallace Poon was appointed last year to introduce the new service.

NOTE: WALLACE IS A WELL RESPECTED CONSULTANT IN EYE SURGERY.

Worry of travel

"When patients require procedures such as eye surgery they can be quite apprehensive," he said.

"To be able to eliminate the need and the worry of having to travel to London is excellent.

"Having their procedure carried out closer to home not only means they no longer have to endure the long journey, but also means they can be back resting in their own home much sooner."

The new service also means that patients requiring follow-up appointments will be seen at the William Harvey Hospital.
